Dealing With Depression

Depression is affecting more and more people and sufferers are getting younger. It is now known to be linked to stress - both social and work-related. Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to deal with depression quickly and efficiently.

Intermittent stress can be beneficial, helping us achieve peak performance.
Relentless stress is not so good: life's pressures pile up and remain unresolved; our needs remain unmet; our abilities remain untapped.

Over a period, this can lead to anxiety and panic attacks as stress-related hormones go askew.

Symptoms of Depression: Feeling low, disturbed sleep pattern, change in appetite, digestive problems (e.g. indigestion, IBS, stomach ulcers), aches & pains, tiredness, lack of motivation.

Besides food and shelter, we all need certain other things: to have a degree of control over our life and destiny, to enjoy at least some degree of privacy, to receive attention from others and feel valued, to have emotional connection with friends and family, to find meaning and purpose in life. (Being under-stretched and bored can cause as much stress as being over-stretched.)

Six Steps to Overcome Depression

  1. Recognise the causes and do something about them. This is begins with thinking differently and is where you may need most help.

  2. Stop worrying. This too is all about thinking differently, concentrating only on what you can change.

  3. Exercise. In whatever way you enjoy - to help restore your body's chemical balance.

  4. Have fun. This also helps to restore chemical balance - and it's enjoyable!

  5. Eat healthily. Junk food is poisonous! Eat fresh food and include oily fish or take an Omega 3 supplement.

  6. Seek help. You don't need to do this on your own, but avoid anyone who suggests that you're in for a long programme of treatment.
